Two of the Premier League’s worst-hit teams are set to face off on Sunday, with Tottenham and Newcastle both needing wins to renew their top four hopes.

For Spurs, it has been five games since Ange Postecoglou’s side celebrated three points. Four defeats, including to West Ham United last time out, and a draw, saw Tottenham drop from the top of the Premier League table after 10 games, and they now drop to fifth place, 10 points off first place as it stands. Cristian Romero returns from suspension to face West Ham, but now captain and top scorer Son Heung-min finds himself an injury doubt ahead of Sunday after leaving the game with lower back pain. James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Rodrigo Bentancur remain out until 2024 after injuries interrupted strong starts to each of their seasons.

As for Newcastle, there are five regulars and five more key players missing from Eddie Howe’s squad. Sandro Tonali, Sven Botman, Nick Pope, Dan Byrne and Harvey Barnes have all been out for weeks (and will continue to be for longer yet). Hence the 3-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Everton in midweek. With countless injury issues and the busiest period of the season already underway, Newcastle sit seventh in the table, four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.

Live update of the Tottenham and Newcastle match! – Written by Joe Prince-Wright at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham in dreamland as Richarlison scores his second goal – Tottenham 3 Newcastle (60th minute)

A lovely ball from Pedro Porro reaches Richarlison and he takes one touch before sliding the ball under Dubravka and into it. Certainly that is the case now.

We’re off to the second half

Newcastle had a lot of possession at the start of the second half and the home fans became a bit agitated. Understandable given the recent collapses of winning positions.

End of the first half: Tottenham 2-0 Newcastle

It was a fantastic first half of football. Tottenham deserved to win with their header but Newcastle had plenty of chances on the counter-attack too. Can Tottenham hold onto that lead this time? Sure they can…

Very close to the third for Tottenham

Richarlison was very close to making it 3-0. He couldn’t get enough of a header from two yards out after Kulusevski’s cross took a deflection and flew into the air. Spurs look like they are scoring every time they take the lead. Newcastle are all over the place at the back.

Brilliant effort from Son as Richarlison doubles Tottenham’s lead – Tottenham 2-0 Newcastle (38th minute)

Absolutely Son-sational! He got past Trippier with great skill and found Richarlison to head home. Loud celebrations here in Tottenham. They needed that second goal. in a bad manner. They almost snatched another immediately afterwards as Johnson fired wide.

Son set up Richarlison to make it 2-0 to the Magpies

Heung-Min Son’s dazzling run led to Richarlison scoring Tottenham’s second goal in the first half to take a 2-0 lead over Newcastle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

An excellent first half so far for the hosts, but Newcastle still pose a threat

Tottenham are getting a lot of happiness out wide. Son and Johnson get flogged a lot. Livramento and Trippier have no protection at all because the positioning of Udogie and Porro pulls Gordon and Almiron out of wide areas and creates huge openings. Tottenham are 1-0 up for the sixth game in a row, and we know they haven’t won on the last five occasions. But this has a slightly different feel to it. I’d also say Newcastle should make it 1-1 as Johnson gives the ball away and Almiron comes in but his weak effort is straight at Vicario. It feels like this Spurs team is just one pass away from disaster.

Tottenham takes the lead through Destiny Udoji – Tottenham 1-0 Newcastle (minute 26)

All the crosses they made into the box finally paid off. Destiny Udogie starts the action as he plays it wide in front of Son and his cross is perfect for the onrushing Udogie to slot the ball home. Tottenham take the lead and Ange Postecoglou punches the air in delight. Despite some early concerns, Spurs are worth it.

Udoji scores Tottenham’s opening goal against Newcastle

Destiny Udogie gets on the receiving end of Heung-Min Son’s cross to give Tottenham a 1-0 lead over the Magpies in the first half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Romero’s header was cleared off the goal line

Cristian Romero fires a corner kick towards the bottom corner, but Miguel Almiron is there to clear it off the goal line. Spurs are building momentum.

A strong start as Tottenham try to get the lead

This game started out exactly as we expected: from start to finish. Bruno Guimaraes drilled one end after Tottenham had chances through Richarlison and Son. Moments later, Ben Davies got a decisive touch on a cross as Isak was about to slot the ball home. Davies celebrates the clearance like it’s a goal but Newcastle are getting some great chances on the counter thanks to Spurs’ high line. Looks like this won’t stay 0-0 for much longer…

Pre-match chat

The DJ is belting out some absolute hits here and there is a real buzz and anticipation in the air. We all expect a lot of goals, entertainment and general chaos. This is the match between Tottenham and Newcastle! Buckle up, this could be unbelievable.

Hello and welcome to North London! The rain showers have passed (for now) and the winter sun is peeking through the clouds. It’s a beautiful day for what should be a very entertaining match between two teams that need a win and are usually in a much better position when giving their all to achieve victory. It looks like Ange Postecoglou and Eddie Howe would get along if they had a pint in the pub and their playing philosophies were quite similar. Of course, it comes down to who will actually be available due to the many injuries to both teams, but we are still waiting for the match.

When it comes to team news, Heung-Min Son is ready to start which is a huge boost and is an all-round attack for Tottenham. When Aang’s ball doesn’t go as expected, what does Aang do? Double up, of course… As for Newcastle’s lineup, well, it’s the same lineup they keep putting out. That’s pretty much all they have, while Sean Longstaff is at least fit enough to make the bench which is a boost.

Tottenham lineup

ai Boro, Romero, Davies, Udoji; Bissouma, Sar; Johnson, Kulusevsky Son; Richarlison

Newcastle lineup

Dubravka. Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Livramento; Miley, Guimarães, Joelinton; Almiron, Isaac, Gordon
