The Southern Wrestling Officials Association Kickoff Classic featured plenty of competitors with impressive resumes. Fittingly, five area wrestlers are picking up where they left off last season.

New York State Public High School Athletic Association champions Tavio Howes of Southwestern and Jordan Gosselin of Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Claymer captured titles Saturday in the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Jamestown Community College.

Joining Hoose and Joslyn as top-place finishers among area wrestlers are Carmine Calimeri of Southwest, Matt Trimm of Maple Grove, and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Eason Shirley of Clymer. This trio qualified for state earlier this year as well.

Hoose capped the weekend with an 8-1 decision over Zachary Caldwell of St. Francis at 190 pounds for the title. Joslyn knocked out Jacob McVeagh of Hanyu Falls Lima by a 10-6 decision at 138 pounds. Calimeri pinned Israel Walker of Lewiston Porter in 4:54 at 131 pounds. Trim edged Mason Maring of Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer 6-4 at 215 pounds. Shirley beat Max Smith of Williamsville North/East 4-3 at 285 pounds.

Here are the area wrestlers who placed second: Adika Fiscus of Warren (116); Caden Inkley of Randolph (160); Maring Lake Chautauqua/Westfield/Panama/Clymer (215)
