BUFFALO — The Jamestown boys basketball team played what coach Billy Miley called “probably our best defensive game” of the young season in the Tom Keenan Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon at Bernard J. Kennedy Fieldhouse.

There was one problem.

The Red Raiders had trouble putting the ball in the basket.

Jamestown led 16-12 after the first quarter, but managed only 14 points the rest of the game, including any in the final eight minutes, and suffered a 45-30 loss to host Canisius.

The setback drops the Red Raiders to 3-1. They will be back in action next Saturday for a 2:30pm tip-off at Park.

“At halftime I told (the team), ‘We’re down four goals to Canisius. I’ll take that all day. We’re on the road against one of the best teams in Western New York, and we know we can play better.’

Unfortunately for Miley, the offensive struggles continued as Jamestown only managed to score 10 points after the break – all in the third quarter.

“They took advantage of every little mistake we made, and they were able to do that for most of the game,” he said. “Overall, I was definitely happy with the defensive effort.”

Bishop Potts led the Red Raiders with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Jaydean Johnson had 10 points and seven boards, but Jamestown shot just 11 of its 39 points from the field.

Canisius (2-0), which shot 18-of-55 from the floor, was led by Nick Purdy with 14 points and Alex Hayes with 10.

“He’s worked hard to get where he is now,” said Randolph coach Kevin Hind, Drew’s father. “I couldn’t be more proud of the baby.

“The celebration (of reaching that milestone) was at the end of the third quarter. It was a one-point game. They literally took our picture and I said, ‘We have a game to play.’ At that point it was more important to win the game.”
