Don't buy from scalpers, wait or buy a PlayStation portal alternative instead

summary

  • PlayStation Portal is a one-note tool that allows PS5 owners to stream their console to a mobile device, and there are already other devices that offer the same functionality at a better price and with more versatility.
  • Alternative devices and third-party applications such as PS Play provide a more flexible gaming experience compared to PlayStation Portal, allowing players to use their phones or controllers.
  • Dedicated Android portable consoles provide a better all-in-one option for gaming and emulation, offering more functionality and versatility than the PlayStation Portal at a lower price.

History repeated itself with the release of the PlayStation Portal, as the device sold out just as well as the initial release of the PlayStation Portal PlayStation 5, but PlayStation fans should buy a better device to stream the console instead of chasing restocks or falling prey to scalpers. PlayStation Portal is a great one-note tool, allowing a PS5 owner to stream their console to the mobile device and play it away from the TV the PS5 is connected to. While the use cases are questionable for some, the biggest problem with the Gateway is that there are already other devices that do the same thing, at a better price, and with much greater versatility.

When what PlayStation Portal does was revealed, many noted that streaming a PS5 controller to a mobile device is already possible on modern Android and iOS mobile devices. The Portal’s form factor is essentially a split DualSense controller with a screen between the two halves. This gives Portal touch controls that provide a much better experience than playing PS5 games using a touchscreen, but sticky controllers for mobile phones have been available for some time. The official PS Remote Play app is remarkably finicky about which controllers it will accept, but the licensed Backbone One PlayStation Edition works with the app.

PlayStation Portal, as well as alternative devices for streaming PS5 games, rely heavily on a user’s internet connection, and work best on their home network.

Cheaper PlayStation Portal alternatives still offer more functionality

Playing a game with Backbone and a mobile phone is just as convenient as using an actual PS5 controller, and allows players to use the phone they already own. Backbone has great controls, and especially allows consumers to do more than one thing, unlike PlayStation Portal. It can be used with many Android or iOS games without the need for complex button mapping, in addition to the various emulation apps available to Android owners. The Backbone isn’t the cheapest add-on mobile controller, retailing for $100 (although sale prices often drop to $70 or $75). PS Play: Remote Play expands the options.

This $6 third-party app can stream your PS4 or PS5 to an Android device without the limitations of the official PS Remote Play app. The PS Play works as well as the PS Remote Play, in terms of connectivity and image quality, but it pairs with almost any controller, not just the Backbone One PlayStation Edition or the physical DualSense connected via Bluetooth. The PS5 owner can then use a Razer Kishi, Nacon MG-X Pro Android Controller, or other similar device, to play PS5 games remotely using high-quality haptic controls. However, some players don’t like having a controller attached to the device, rather than built-in, like the Portal.

The third-party Chiaki app also allows for live streaming on PlayStation 5 using the Steam Deck.

For consumers who want an all-in-one device, a dedicated Android portable console is still a better option than the PlayStation Portal. Android controllers like the Anbernic RG505 are mainly used to emulate and play Android games, but the third-party PS Play app can allow them to be streamed from a PS5, too. These controllers are still cheaper than the PlayStation Portal but offer a lot more in terms of functionality and versatility. Those interested in high-end gaming and emulation can look to options like Ayn Odin, which is priced similarly to Portal, or for the best experience, more expensive options may be worth considering.

An Android phone or console can turn on the PS5 and play games offline

Don't feed scalpers, buy a better PlayStation Portal alternative instead - Image of the Aya Neo Pocket Air, a high-spec Android console that beats the PlayStation Portal

The Ayn Odin 2, Aya Neo Pocket Air, and Pimax Portal Retro all offer top-tier Android specs, giving them all the gaming options available on a high-end phone, including the ability to stream PS5 streaming. These controllers can play Android games like Diablo Immortal, go beyond Android emulation, and more, instead of just PS5 streaming. If a PlayStation fan really wants a device for just PS5 streaming, Anbernic’s low-end Android handheld, or a controller connected to a refurbished Android phone, can easily provide that, while still playing games offline. Streaming on PS5 depends largely on your internet connection, not your device’s specifications.

Where the PlayStation Vita can stream the PS4, along with playing its library of games, PlayStation Portal is specialized and limited to a ridiculous degree. Scalpers may have thought this was the next PS5, and intended to resell the devices at a higher price, but PlayStation 5 Fans are better off going through the portal and looking for one of the many alternatives that can do more than one thing, often at a much cheaper price.

In recent years, the demand for gaming consoles like the PlayStation has skyrocketed, leading to an unfortunate rise in scalping – the practice of buying products at retail price and reselling them at inflated prices. This not only hurts gamers and consumers, but also undermines the integrity of the gaming industry. Instead of succumbing to the tactics of scalpers, it’s important to consider alternative options such as waiting for restocks or exploring other gaming portals for purchasing a PlayStation or similar gaming console. By taking a stand against scalping, we can send a powerful message and support fair and ethical practices within the gaming community.
