A high school water use video contest can earn a student $500

Santa Barbara County high school students are invited to create entertaining and informational videos conveying the importance of using water efficiently, with winners receiving up to $500 from local sponsors.

The Santa Barbara County Water Agency has issued media guidelines and opened the application process for the 25th Annual WaterWise High School Video Contest.

The contest theme, “Tips for an Inspiring Water Garden,” was chosen to highlight the continuing importance of sustainable outdoor water use, especially in drought-prone Santa Barbara County.

“It’s a fun, educational competition that we look forward to every year. We’re excited to continue this long-standing program into its 25th year and can’t wait to see the amazing videos created by our local high school students,” said Matt Young, County Water Agency Director.

Winners will receive prizes for themselves and their schools, and select videos can also be viewed on local broadcast television and in movie theaters.

While the county water agency and water providers arrange financial prizes for the winning schools, local private sponsors offer prizes to the students:

– First place (English): $500 provided by Carollo Engineers.

– First place (Spanish): $500 presented by La Buena 105.1 FM.

– Second place: US$250 provided by Geosyntec.

– Third place: $150 presented by Ewing Irrigation.

People’s Choice Award (voted by the public on the WaterWiseSB YouTube channel): $500 presented by Dudek.

To be eligible to win prizes, participating students must submit their videos and completed application packet online by 11:59pm on Friday, March 8. Student winners will be announced publicly in May.

The competition meets several California Department of Education content standards, including application of world languages. To learn more and apply for the contest, visit WaterWiseSB.org/HSVC.
