Masconomet 6, Marblehead 5: In a fierce contest, the Chieftains took a 4-0 lead, allowing Marblehead to within a point, scoring two more goals in a 20-second span and halting a late header rally. Jack Fabiano led the charge for the winners with two goals and an assist, and Ben Merrill added a goal and an assist. Johnny Merault, Evan O’Hare and Brady Ford also scored for Masco. Alan Weitzman (2), Jack Weedon, Colten Rousseau, Anthony Cerbone, Alex Perry and John Mega also had assists; Captain Chris Sako stopped 16 shots into the net.

Avin Rudowski and Kyle Hart each had a goal and an assist for Marblehead, while Crew Monaco, Cam Waldman and Charlie Grenier also scored. Hogan Sedqi, James Cairan and London Macdonald each added two assists and Toby Grenier one, with goalkeepers Kyle Rushton and Leo Burridge seeing the action.

North Andover 1, Marblehead 0: The Hyders (0-3) lost their third straight game by one goal to start the season Sunday afternoon on the road despite 24 saves from goaltender Leo Berridge.

Swampscott 2, Rockport 1 (OT): Shortly after captain Derek Vaia scored the game-tying goal, Will Ruddy scored the game-winner in overtime for the Big Blue (1-0-1). Rudy also assisted on Vaia’s goal, Vaia did the same to Rudy, and defender Frankie Pappalardo had helpers on both goals. His brother, goaltender Dom Pappalardo, finished with 25 saves in net.

Winthrop 7, Danvers 1: Host Winthrop scored six goals in the middle sectional to open a Northeast Conference matchup with Danvers (now 2-1). Josh Henry had the mark for the Falcons with help from Cooper Dunham. Freshman goalie Cody Standring came in relief in his first varsity outing and made two breakaway stops, finishing with 10 saves.

Pingree splits on Saturday: In the Brooks/Pingree tournament, the Highlanders lost a 9 a.m. game Saturday to Tilton, 4-1, with Trey Hanson scoring on an assist from captain Ryan Kavanagh and a 25-save save on Nick Hubbard. Later in the afternoon, Pingry rebounded with a 1-0 win over Berwick as Von Larsson made 23 saves for his first varsity shutout. Marco Mottola’s second-half goal, assisted by Bruce Danaher and Nick Mollison, was the game-winner.

Pingree 1, New Hampton 1 (OT): Quinn Moses combined for a shorthanded goal to give the Highlanders (now 2-6-2) a second-period lead, but visiting New Hampton tied it in the third before winning the third-place game in the Brooks/Pingree tournament on penalties (however, it would fall to Officially as a tie). Goaltender Nick Hubbard stopped 22 shots for Pingree, which went 1-1-2 during the tournament.

Arlington Catholic 4, Bishop Fenwick 0: Parker Pierre was busy for the Crusaders (0-2), stopping 50 shots in this setback in the Catholic Central League. Fenwick finished with 18 shots of his own but for the second straight contest was unable to light the lamp.

Linfield 3, Essex Tech 0: Host Linfield scored three goals in the first quarter and outscored the Hawks (0-2) from there. Garrett White finished with 28 saves for Essex Tech, with additional strong performances from Cam Casey, Anthony Bisenti, Jaydan Vargas and Mason Sutcliffe.

Girls hockey

Beverly 6, Marblehead 1: Avery LeBlanc, Haley Greenleaf and Clara Carey each finished with a goal and an assist to lead the Panthers to victory in the Northeast Hockey League. Megan Ryan, Grace Corbett and Oska Keogh also lit the light for the Orange and Black (2-1), with Carolyn Horne dishing out two assists while Emily Tibbetts, Olivia Baldassari and Ashley Freitas had one each. Meredith Johnston hit home the win.

Maddie Graber’s third-period goal with less than six minutes left kept Marblehead (1-3) from exiting. Scarlett Lee finished with 21 tackles, while new players Lizzie DiMadi shined on offense and Emilia Russo on defense.

Pingree drops two: In the Newton Country Day Tournament, the Highlanders were eliminated by tournament champion Brewster despite a 44-save effort from freshman Piper Devicus. Earlier in the day, Pingree fell to Greenwich Country Day 5-2 thanks to goals from Harley White and Julia Gergorovich and assists from Cora Reidy and Alexa Blazer. Davekos was stopped at 24 in that game and Pingree went 1-2 in the Holiday Tournament.

Bishop Fehan 4, Bishop Fenwick 0: Junior captain Ella Tucker made 40 saves for Fenwick (0-2) in a Catholic Central League contest.

Peabody 4, Shawsheen 1: Freshman defenseman Eleni Spaak scored a pair of goals to power the Tanners (2-0) on the road. Junior Erin Dee and sophomore Abby McInerney also recorded assists from juniors Mia Lava, Shirley Whitmore and Danielle White.

Beverly is second at the Wayland Holiday Invitational: The Panthers earned a pair of first-place finishes from Joe Baker at 165 pounds and Gino Sicari at 190 to take second place overall at the Wayland Holiday Invitational. Second-place performances from Brayden Beaulieu (106 pounds), Tristan Gould (144) and Casey Nako (157) also helped boost the Orange and Black, as did third-place finishes Cooper Lange (113) and Bradan McNeil (175). The fourth was from Jack Considine (215) and the fifth was from Jayden Santos (150).

Connolly shines for Fenwick: Senior Luke Connolly was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Tyngsboro Big Red Tournament for Northeast/Bishop Fenwick, winning the title at 165 pounds. Anthony Nichols (2nd, 215 pounds), Jackson Cody (3rd, 120), Tyler Connolly (3rd, 175), Ryan Kochanski (4th, 150) and Seamus Quinn (4th, 157) also placed in the top four for Fenwick.

Marblehead/Swampscott is sixth: Eighth-grader Brady Haskell earned a pair of pins to reach the 106-pound finals before pinning his Hanoverian opponent in the title match (after going 14-1) to capture his first high school championship and lead the Black & Blue to a placed sixth in the Anthony Listano Memorial Tournament in Wakefield. Sophomore captain Liam O’Brien went 4-1 to finish fifth. Junior captains Mason Henshaw (3-1, third place), Clive Connolly (3-2, sixth place), and senior captain Angelo Knight (3-2, sixth place) are all at center. Marblehead/Swampscott, which finished with 125 points, got its first varsity victories from eighth-graders Atticus Jacques (who went 2-2), Chuck Conlon and James Carey (also went 2-2 on the day). Junior Justin Gonzalez and Ben O’Brien also went 2-2 on the day, with singles victories coming from sophomore Phineas Jakius, junior Alejandro Haven, senior Will Woodward and freshman Andrew DeLisle.

Girls basketball

Pingree splits in Christmas tournament: The Highlanders defeated Greenwich Academy, 37-26, early Saturday in the Christmas tournament, but fell to a powerhouse Thayer team, 45-39, later in the day in the title game. Layla Campbell, Hannah Shields, Keke Gable and Bella Vaz each scored seven points in a balanced morning attack. In the night cup, Vaz scored 17 points, Gable seven points and Shauna O’Brien six points.

Boys basketball

Peabody 72, Bishop Fenwick 50: The Tanners improved to 3-0, 25 points ahead of Ravel Laurent. AJ Forte added 16 points, while Jarriel Tolentino and Yianni Pappas each scored eight points.

For Fenwick (2-2), James Michaelis dropped 25 points while Jimmy Fahey had nine points and six boards.

Men’s college basketball

Salem State 64, Plymouth State 63: Jaden Castillo finished with 19 points, including five 3-pointers plus the winning layup in the final seconds, to give the Vikings (64-63) a big win heading into the holiday break. Michael McCaig (9 rebounds) and LZ Hicks added nine points for Salem State, which got eight more from Liam Byrne and Will Martinez.
