analysis: The Bears are once again looking to have a very strong team with a lot of depth. “We are ready to work hard and enjoy our time on and off the ice,” Furmankova said.

Hartford

trainer: Ian O’Brien (1)

League: Southern Vermont League.

Returnees: Senior — Nathaniel Crum; Juniors – Colby Luca, Cavan O’Brien, Lillian Parker.

New arrivals: Juniors – Sebastian Fraser, Wyatt Kostavec, Ivy Rohrbach.

analysis: The Hurricanes program continues to grow since returning to varsity status in 2016. “Our focus will be on building team strength and stamina and working on gateway training,” O’Brien said.

Lebanon

trainer: Mike Anikis (23)

last year: Both the boys and girls placed eighth at the state meet.

League: NHIAA Division III.

Returnees: Seniors – Maren Pearson, Olivia Cook; Junior: Arlo Hastings; Sophomores – Abby Pearson, Keren Lord, Marianna Uteel.

New arrivals: Seniors – James Barnett, Izzy Rutherford; Juniors: Lenny Ray, Madalyn Parker; Sophomores – Gabby Herring, Peyton Rutherford, Caitlin Hastings; Freshmen – Kyle Grant, Emily Groves.

analysis: The boys graduated four seniors and will regroup with a young team led by Pearson, who is looking to make the top 10 at states. The girls return with a bigger group than last season and any of their multiple skaters could make a run in the top ten. That includes Maren Pierson, who finished 12th in the state giant slalom a year ago.

Thetford

trainer: Amy Heffer (11)

last year: The boys qualified for the state championship race

League: Southern Vermont League.

Returnees: Senior – Oliver Yukika; Juniors: Maya Dixon, Ellie O’Brien, Heidi Hughes, Willow Slayton, Bianca Pulaski, Ella Harvey, Isaac Yukica, Connor Ginn, Oliver Ransom, Hardy Payson; Sophomores – Mavis Downey, Sophia Harvey, Elijah Renner.

New arrivals: Freshmen – Reagan Eckgreen, Lillian Miller, Hailey Reese, Tanner Hardy, Benjamin Nallett.

analysis: The Panthers return several performers from last season. Maya Dixon leads the girls after representing Thetford at the individual state championship. The Yukika brothers lead a deep team on the boys side.

“The progress and growth in confidence across the women’s team over the past few years has been amazing to watch and coach,” Heifer said.

Woodstock

trainer: Cheyenne Wood (4)

last year: Won the SVL league title, and third in the state championship. Boys or girls???

League: Southern Vermont League, VPA Division I.

Returnees: Bud Wood, Chloe Masiello, Ben Johnson, Levi Haley, Owen Cross, Claudia Shoemaker, Oliver O’Neill, Jack Quaker, Avril Stevens, Olivia Grasso, Maggie Pierce, Anges Kardashian.

New arrivals: Finlay Peterson, Sadie Bullpool.

analysis: The Wasps benefit from access to the Saskadena Six in Pomfret. The Alpine team once again looks to be one of the strongest teams in Vermont, led by Wood and Masiello, who each have multiple appearances representing Team Vermont in the Eastern High School Championship event.

“Woodstock Alpine has a long history of producing the best skiers and winning titles,” said Cheyenne Wood. “That spirit is still strong in this year’s group. We start doing the hard work of crying at the beginning of the season so we can smile at the end.

Nordic skiingHanover

last year: The boys and girls placed second at the CVC Championships and fourth at state.

League: NHIAA Division II

analysis: Senior leaders Healy, Sandor, Parker and Gleason lead another senior team in a program with a long history of excellence.

last year: The girls placed third at the state tournament and the boys placed sixth.

League: NHIAA Division II.

Returnees: Seniors – Heidi Ahlgren, James Barnett, Carson Boardman, Leah Castle, Conner Chen, Nora Falcone, Levi Wilmot; Juniors: Rhea Wykes, Anya Woolcott, Augustin Ramos-Glio, Abigail Gallagher, Reed Ferland, Otto Born; Sophomores – Alex Boardman, Isabelle Caffrey, Amelia Gallagher, Angelo Goodwin, Anneliese Hanna, Ollie Hermansson, Jacob Maughan, Minji Mueckens, Harper Rancourt.

analysis: George Hanna succeeds longtime coach Les Lawrence, but there are other volunteer coaches who have been with the program for years. Both boys and girls are expected to do well at states, with the latter being particularly promising. The Raiders will join Hanover in being able to use Dartmouth College’s new course, which includes the ability to make snow, and George Hanna expects that continued access to good conditions will help the performers. Hannah’s daughter, Annie, is one of the best in the country for her age group.

Woodstock

trainer: Jeremy Reid (4)

last year: The boys placed third at the state tournament and the girls placed fourth.

League: Southern Vermont League, Vermont Division II

Returnees: Seniors – Maxwell Abrams, Farren Stainton, Ella Stainton; Juniors: Graham Fox, Joseph Sluka, Rue Staal, James Underwood, Quinn Ova, Isabelle Cellini, Ada Mawood, Myra MacNaughton; Sophomores – Schuyler Hagee, Priscilla Richardson, Helen Maya Sluka.

New arrivals: Student – Sophia Rosenbach; Freshmen: Nicholas Cellini, Caleb Enser, Logan Martz, Luke Pomeroy.

analysis: The Wasps return to a great squad and look to be competing again in the end-of-season meetings. Underwood was the division champion in the classic event.

Ski jumpingHanover

trainer: Tom Dodds (12)

last year: The boys and girls were state champions.

League: NHIAA Division I

Returnees: Seniors: Adam Goodney; Juniors: Charlie Forbush, Schuyler Clapp, Jay Gregory.

New arrivals: Seniors – Sean Smith, Zach Tracy; Student: Hayden Clapp.

analysis: The boys returning players are among the best in the state. All four members of the girls team graduated last season, including individual champion Jala Gregory. So did dual individual state champion Schuyler Clapp.

“We have a small team, but the returning jumpers are very motivated,” Dodds said. “The three newcomers to the boys team have been skilled contributors on the soccer field this fall and all appear to be picking up jumping skills quickly.”

SnowboardingWoodstock

trainer: Alyssa McDonough (1)

last year: The girls won the state championship.

League: First Vermont Division.

Returnees: Seniors – Cormac Farrell, Jonas Wysocki, Zev Wysocki, Skye Colley, Amelie Faber; Junior – Sam Gomez; Sophomores – Sierra Bystrak, Marlena Farinas, Leah Gigliotta, Bonnie Kranz, Kyler Eaton, Ian Hewitt.

New arrivals: Senior – J.D. Cross; Sophomore: Chiara Fenauer Stein; Freshmen: Julie Barry, Santino Boren, Des Early, Camden King, Jada Roach.

analysis: The Wasps return to the core of last season’s state title girls team, once again led by Cali, Kranz and Gigliotta. The boys, second a year ago to Burr and Burton, will be led by seniors Zev and Jonas Wysocki. Eaton was a key part of last season’s team as a freshman.

“With most of our girls back from last year, we will be looking to repeat for another state championship,” said McDonough, who has been an assistant coach for the past nine years. “The boys are hungry after being left out last year.”
