KAHULUI — Seabury Hall crews finished third in the boys and girls divisions at the Hawaii State/HHSAA Regatta last season, one point out of the cup in each case.

A closer look shows the Spartans were 1.81 seconds away from adding the runner-up koa-wood and warrior’s head trophies to the trophy they brought home from the co-ed division.

On Saturday, at the Maui Interscholastic League No. 1 Regatta at Kahului Harbor, the Spartans began their mission to add more hardware to their trophy case with four state championships and seven state runner-up trophies already covered.

They won all three varsity finals – boys, girls and mixed – by wide margins.

“I don’t really want to say too much, but I think they’re very excited. We have great leaders and leadership from the older kids, which is key to any successful sports team.” said Seabury Hall coach Paul Lowe. “I really appreciate the other coaches that come in to help me and our older kids, they are really good leaders for our younger kids.

“Everyone put their cards on the table today, so everyone knows we all played our cards. I’m really glad our kids swept it.”

Seabury Hall captains Cody Frampton and Lei’ohu Turley were among two winning crews.

“It was my last year in this race, I just got into this race and I want to be a little nostalgic about it and the years we did it before.” Turley said. “I didn’t really have any expectations. Every time we start the season, we don’t know who’s been working hard. So I’m really proud of us to see all that hard work and training pay off.”

Said Frampton: “I think it’s really cool, our team, I mean we’ve been together for a long time. This whole semester, we’ve been together since the second year after we came out of COVID. So, we’ve just been mingling with the kids that are in our boat. … We’ve all been cruising together been a while, so it’s really cool to see how it all came together.

Frampton said it was the country’s performance last season – and close finishes but no cigars – that leads this entire group.

The Seabury Hall boys pull away to win the boys squash on Saturday’s final.

“We had high expectations last year, and we didn’t know if we could win it all, but we were still nervous.” Frampton said. “You know, like our coach always says, ‘First and second get medals, third gets a box of tissues,’ so, we had a lot of boxes of tissues last year. We added some really good kids, but we’re still pretty much the same team.”

“We have those expectations and even higher this year. He’s definitely leading us.”

The Seabury Hall girls’ team of Jasmine Gorman, Zilla Cofron, Kaisha Purdy, Makenna Rogsgeir, Isabelle Brown and Turley won the half-mile race in 4 minutes, 34.33 seconds, more than 19 seconds behind second-place finisher Kamehameha Maui.

Joining Frampton in the boys crew were winners Sage Konohia, John Kahoe, Jake Brocklehurst, Liam Romanczak and Max Moquin. They finished the race with a time of 3:50.83, more than nine seconds behind second-place finisher King Kekaulake.

The Spartans’ mixed crew of Frampton, Konohia, Rugsegger, Brocklehurst, Gorman and Turley won in a time of 4:16.94, more than 10 seconds ahead of Na Ali.

Maui Prep reached its second and third MIL finals in school history on Saturday — girls and coed — and its third-place finish in the girls race was the best ever for the small private school in Napili.

The MPA girls crew included third-place finisher Joni Holland, Isabelle Birchard, Lainey Mullen, Presley Williams, Callie Liarenza and Kyra Newton.

While it remains to be determined whether MIL will have two or three state regatta lanes, the Na Pueo girls showed they are contenders for a state berth after finishing just 1.37 seconds behind second-place Kamehameha.

“This is definitely the first time we have reached two finals in one regatta.” said coach Rose Crichton. “For me personally, my husband (Walker Crayton) has been coaching for the last six years, since 2017 or so and we have seen progress over the years. For a good four years, we have been able to work with the kids, especially the ones who came in their first year They had never rowed before.

Walker Creighton is the head coach, while Rose Creighton and Teddy Ah Bock are the assistant coaches. Among the new paddlers on the team is Landon Long, an outstanding golfer.

“It’s really only the first race, there’s still a lot to work on, but it’s good to get out of the way, take the stress away.” Rose Crichton said.
