SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In this edition of Division 2 on Campus, we take a look at how our local student-athletes are faring in the college ranks across the country. We cover everything from basketball, hockey, indoor track, swimming and diving. Statistics are as of December 15, 2023. If we missed anyone, please email our sports department.

Women’s college basketball:

Dolly Kearns, Saratoga Springs, Florida Gulf Coast University: After transferring from Rhode Island, the Saratoga Springs graduate averaged 10.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game for the Eagles. In November, she went on five straight contests scoring double figures in points. In a November 14 win over Florida International University, she scored a season-high 19 points.

Megan Huerter, Shenendehowa, University at Albany: The Shenendehowa graduate is averaging 8.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game for the Great Danes. On December 12, she scored a season-high 20 points and knocked down six threes in a win over Dartmouth.

Marlee Mueller, Stillwater, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute: In five games this season, the Stillwater graduate is averaging 4.2 points, 0.2 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game for the Engineers.

Men’s college basketball:

Keegan Zoller, Ballston Spa, Florida College: The Ballston Spa and Saint Rose native is averaging 7.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for the Falcons in 15 games.

Swimming and diving for women:

Talia Spenzero, Shenendehowa, Siena: On Dec. 6, the Shenendehowa graduate was named MAAC Diver of the Week for the fifth time this year. At the ECAC Winter Championships, she placed third in the one-meter diving (229.10) and fourth in the three-meter diving (208.30) and earned 10 career weekly awards.

Ella Simpson, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, RPI: On December 3, the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake graduate compiled an NCAA regional qualifying score, posting a 411.95 to top the qualifying mark of 410 at LGR! Invitation diving in Troy. She was also named to the Liberty League’s Weekly Honor Roll.

Gabriella McSweeney, Stillwater, Clarkson: During the week of Nov. 6, 2023, the Stillwater native was the Freedom League swimmer of the year for the Clarkson Knights in a close dual meet against Oswego State, winning the 50 freestyle in 29.51 seconds. The 400-meter freestyle race was timed at 4:53.43, and the 800-meter freestyle race was timed 10:03.46. It also helped put Clarkson over the top in the final event of the day as first swimmer in the 200-meter freestyle relay, which Clarkson won by less than three-quarters of a second.

Swimming and diving for men:

Lance Mason, Shenendehowa, SUNY Cortland: The Shenendehowa graduate was recognized by the SUNY Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) as the league’s Men’s Diver of the Week, respectively, for the week ending November 19. He placed second in the 3-meter dive (299.75 points) and fourth in the 1-meter dive (264.45 points) at the six-team Merchant Marine Academy Memorial Invitational. His 3-meter score marks the second time this year he has met the NCAA regional meet on that board, earning him a spot in the NCAA regional meet next March.

Logan Shawn, Shenendehowa, Virginia Wesleyan: At the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Dec. 3, the Shenendehowa graduate placed 19th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.69. He was also part of the quartet that placed seventh in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:39.93. In the 1,650 freestyle, he finished ninth with a time of 18:26.71. He finished 11th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:16.77. He was part of the 400 freestyle relay team that placed 10th with a time of 3:42.48. He also placed 10th in the 1,000-yard medley freestyle in 1650 with a time of 11:12.95.

Cal Bird, Saratoga Springs, St. Michael: On Nov. 18 at the North Country Invitational, the Saratoga Springs graduate placed third in the 1,650 free.

Women’s hockey:

Sidney Face, Clifton Park, Boston College: Playing defense for the Boston College Eagles, the Clifton Park native has scored seven points in 18 contests this season.

Men’s hockey:

Jared Lambright, Clifton Park, Williams College: The Clifton Park native and defenseman has three assists in eight contests this season.

Egan Schmidt, Schuylerville, Babson: The Schuylerville native has eight goals and four assists in 13 games this season.

Women’s indoor track and field:

Sarah Fitzgerald, Mechanicsville, St. Rose: On Dec. 8, at the Wagner Seahawk Shootout at the Ocean Breeze Sports Complex on Staten Island, the Mechanicsville graduate clocked the fourth-best 600 meters in St. Rose history, crossing the line in 1:43.08.
