Penn College men get a "W"

All three Penn College of Technology winter sports teams saw action last week, with the wrestling team coming away with the lone victory.

On Saturday at Christ University Dual-Chocolate, the Wildcats went 1-2, losing to eighth-seeded Johnson & Wales in the tournament, 42-9, and Shenandoah, 25-24, and leading Ohio Wesleyan, 31-15.

TJ Martin, of Honesdale, went 3-0 on the day at 149 pounds with a win by fall, a major decision and a loss. 2-1 for Penn College were Luke Heimbach, of Boyertown, at 125; Caden Ware, of Brooklyn, Connecticut, 133; and Nikolai Brotzman, of Marietta, at No. 285. Martin and Patrick Snook, of Northampton, who finished 1-1 at No. 141, both have victories over regionally ranked opponents.

A day ago, a program-record seven Wildcats made it into the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Mideast Region rankings.

Montoursville’s Isaac Corey, a sophomore, remained third nationally and first in the region at 184 in the third poll of the season, while junior Noah Hunt, of Muncie, moved from second to third at 141. Martin, a sophomore New, moved from fifth to seventh at 149 years old. Weir, a freshman, moved from sixth to seventh at 149. Making their first appearance in the rankings are freshmen Brotzman, sixth at 285; Travis Green, of Manchester, Md., eighth with 165; and Kid Schneck, of Pine Grove, eighth with 174.

The seven seeded wrestlers are ranked second in the region with Elizabethtown and Ithaca ranked 23rd, and just behind the College of New Jersey, which is ranked ninth.

Men’s basketball
At Elmira College on Monday, the home team outscored the Wildcats in each half en route to a 103-90 win. Livingston Cross, from Union, New Jersey, led Pennsylvania College by scoring 31 points and 13 rebounds. Cross’s 30-plus point effort put him in elite company with only nine other Wildcat men to reach that mark this century. Garnet Valley’s Max Jackowski also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

On Wednesday, for the second game in a row, Penn College scored at least 90 points but this time lost to King’s College 100-94. Gavin Barrett, of Roselle, New Jersey, led the Wildcats with 21 points and 14 assists.

Women’s basketball
Playing back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday, Penn College lost for the first time at Centenary University, 77-50, and fell at home to York College, 68-40.

Against Centenary, the home team had the upper hand in each quarter and had a 35-21 advantage in field goals for the game. Rachel Teets, of Middleburg, and Lexi Troup, of Huntingdon, scored 12 points for the Wildcats.

Against York College, another first-time opponent, Penn College won 39-12 through the middle two periods after leading by three after the first quarter. Troup led the Wildcats with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Academics
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL — Seniors Cheyenne Stein, of Orwigsburg, and Maggie Mangin, of Paulsburg, and junior Hailey DeBrody, of Cogan Station, were named to the 2023 College Athletic Communications Academic All-Division III team announced Tuesday.

Student-athletes selected for the 2023 All-Area Academic Team must be at least a sophomore or higher, maintain a GPA of 3.50 or higher and have competed in 90% of the institution’s competitions or started in 66% of the competitions. The teams honor the nation’s best student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom.
