Cardiac arrest among college basketball players
Unfortunately, James wasn’t even the first member of USC’s basketball program to suffer a cardiac arrest during a team practice. USC big man Vincent Iwochukwu suffered a cardiac arrest last summer and missed the first 16 games of the 2022-23 season because of it. So far this season, James has missed USC’s first seven games.
In late 2020, Florida wing Keontae Johnson suffered the most high-profile case of a college-level cardiac event in recent memory. Johnson, a first-round draft pick, collapsed on the field during a game against Florida State. He was later diagnosed with sudden cardiac arrest. Johnson did not play the remainder of the season and missed the entire 2021-22 season before returning to Kansas State last season.
Former Baylor star Jared Butler was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in the United States, when he was 18 years old and preparing to begin his college career. Butler became an All-American, though his status was flagged during the NBA draft process, dropping him to the 40th pick in 2021.

Before James suffered health scares over the summer that put his football career in jeopardy Doubt, it is He was considered a late lottery/early first round pick of the NBA Draft in various mock drafts by CBS Sports. In Kyle Boone’s latest mock draft earlier this week, James was not selected in the first round.
There are many factors at play when looking at his draft stock moving forward. The first and most obvious question is what will he look like on the basketball court? The reason James is considered a potential first-round pick in the first place is because his playing style fits the modern NBA game. James is active on the defensive side and has a high basketball IQ. Both translate to the next level.
The other factor in his draft stock is his last name. His father, LeBron James, has expressed several times over the years his desire to play with his son in the NBA. The elder James signed a two-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers last summer that runs through the 2024-25 season. It’s possible that the team could be tempted to select the younger James if they knew his father would make his way to that team in question.

James’ return to the court this weekend is a huge win for USC and college basketball as a whole. After suffering such a major health crisis in July, there were serious doubts about when or if he would return to court. James is a very good basketball player who should help the Trojans get back on track because he is an ideal player who can complement Boogie Ellis and Isaiah Collier in the backcourt. His high basketball IQ and willingness to be unselfish will have a huge impact no matter how many minutes he plays this weekend or moving forward. His return should provide the perfect storm in building momentum heading into a showdown with Auburn next weekend. Prediction: USC -14

In case there was any doubt, USC announced that Bronny James is cleared to play and is available against LBSU.
